Formed in 1996 Albuquerque, New Mexico, The Shins have seen multiple lineup changes through the years, but kept fans happy with a true thread of original style throughout, owing largely to the work of principal songwriter and only original remaining band member James Mercer. The band's first two releases, “Oh, Inverted World,” and “Chutes Too Narrow,” were commercial successes, receiving positive reviews from critics, but their big breakthrough came with the single “New Slang,” when it was featured in the soundtrack of the film “Garden State.” Their third album, “Wincing The Night Away,” was a phenomenal success as a result, hitting second place on the Billboard 200 and earning the group a Grammy Award nomination!!!

“Heartworms,” is a complex album, being the first by Mercer without any of the original lineup – essentially becoming the entire band himself. In this respect it reveals much of his own personal struggles and anxieties more than anything he's ever done before, and is in many ways his most mature, reflective album yet. Pitchfork rated the album favourably, stating Merce “creates the illusion that songs come to him quickly, as if pulled from thin air, even if the five year gaps between the last few Shins albums argue otherwise. His gift for making fussy arrangements seem effortless remains unparalleled.”
