Nathaniel Rateliff and The Night Sweats at The Stage AE

Nathaniel Rateliff is a folk rock icon who has worked on various projects, such as Born in Flood, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Wheel, his solo work, and his longest-running group, Nathaniel & the Night Sweats. In the early 2000s, Rateliff almost signed a record deal with the rock music label Roadrunner Records for his band Born in Blood. Impressed by their debut album, If This Thing Should Spill, the label was ready to bring the band’s hometown popularity to new heights. However, Rateliff had a different plan in mind and wanted to put his effort into creating stripped-down and melancholic folk music. Hence, he made Nathaniel Rateliff & The Wheel.

During the latest 2000s, Rateliff joined with longtime collaborator Joseph Pope III, and together they recruited more members who would play violin, organ, keys, and more. Pope, whose skills include playing vibes, harmonica, bass, and guitar, worked with Rateliff to release the debut album, Desire and Dissolving Men. Although he was already performing the music he had in mind during his time with Born in Flood, Rateliff wanted to do something more upbeat and soulful.

In 2013, he created Nathaniel & the Night Sweats with Pope. They released their debut single, “Howling at the Night.” The single was spawned from their self-titled debut album, released via Stax Records. The album was a breakout hit. It entered the Billboard 200, peaking at number 17, and topped the Folk Albums chart. Moreover, the band achieved an international breakthrough after the album entered the charts in eight other countries. The 2015 effort released two more successful singles, including the gold-certified hit “ I Need Never Get Old.” and the band’s most popular platinum-certified single, “S.O.B.”

With a stellar debut, Rateliff released two more efforts. In 2018, the band released their sophomore album, Tearing at the Seams. The album soared to number 11 on the Billboard 200 and dominated the Folk Albums chart. The 2018 effort spawned the hit single “You Worry Me,” which went to number 1 on the Canadian chart and Adult Alternative Songs. Meanwhile, the follow-up singles “Honey” and “Hey Mama” peaked at number 2 and number 1 on the Adult Alternative Songs.

This 2023, the band is still promoting songs from their latest effort, The Future. The highly-acclaimed album features the lead single, “Survivor,” which peaked at number 46 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. Last year, the band released their latest single, “I’m On Your Side,” which peaked at number 3 on the Canadian chart.
