Mt. Joy was founded by Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper. Both members attended the same high school in Philadelphia and were making music as a stress reliever from their 9 to 5 jobs. Eventually, the duo parted ways and attended Universities. However, Quinn and Cooper found themselves in Los Angeles after finishing school and decided to make music together once again. The duo wrote “Astrovan.” Released via Spotify, the song garnered more than a million streams in less than a month. According to Quinn, “Astrovan” was a song that just sort of came out, and there was no attempt in writing it to become a hit song.
Still, with the success of “Astrovan,” Quinn and Cooper quit their day jobs, recruited more members, and pursued music full time. Today, Mt. Joy is composed of Matt Quin on vocals and guitar, Sam Cooper on guitar, Sotris Eliopoulo on drums, Jackie Micla on keyboards, and Michael Byrnes on bass.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 2018. The record features singles “Astrovan,” “Sheep,” “Cardinal,” “Silver Lining,” and “Jenny Jenkins.” Upon its release, “Silver Lining” did well on the charts, peaking at number 1 on Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay. Meanwhile, “Jenny Jenkins” placed at number 5 on the same chart. In 2020, the band released their sophomore album, Rearrange Us. The album’s lead single, “Strangers,” peaked at number five on the Alternative Adult Airplay chart.
