Modest Mouse
The GRAMMY Award-nominated Modest Mouse is an American rock band formed in 1993. It was during a heavy metal show when Isaac Brock, Eric Judy, and Jeremiah Green decided to form their own band and make their own music. Taking much inspiration from the Pixies, Modest Mouse recorded their debut EP, Blue Cadet-3, Do You Connect?, in 1994. Their biggest hit “Float On” was released in 2005 and automatically topped the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. It was even nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Rock Song in the same year.
The band’s name is as well thought of as their music. After reading Virginia Woolf’s essay, The Mark on the Wall, in which the famous author called the working middle class the “modest mouse-coloured people,” Brock picked up the name. And so, Modest Mouse was born.
Sadly, the original drummer of the band, Jeremiah Green, lost to a battle against cancer in December 2022. Still, the legacy of Green continues on through their music as Modest Mouse sells out their shows. Its fan base is only getting bigger especially with the younger generations being able to connect with their distinct sound.
Cat Power
The American singer and songwriter, Cat Power, started performing in the early 90’s in local shows. She started making her name known as she recorded cover songs and worked with other bands. Taking inspiration from The Smiths, The Cure, and the Banshees, she started creating her own songs which eventually became known for melancholy lyrics. She later on earned the title, “Queen of Sadcore.”
To date, her eighth studio album, Jukebox, which was published by Matador Records on January 22, 2008, is her most popular one. The album reached its highest position at number 12 on the Billboard 200 album list and number 4 on the French album chart.
In 2022, Cat Power released a full-length album covering Bob Dylan’s 1966 performance at the Royal Albert Hall. Her fan base expanded even more quickly therafter.
After touring in 2023 with sold-out concerts, Modest Mouse and Cat Power decided to keep their fans excited for more shows this 2024. Indie rock just keeps getting more interesting with these two performers joining forces on one stage!
